This session includes an overview of the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy in the U.S., a review of qualitative interviews conducted with people who were pregnant during adolescence describing their preferences for pregnancy options counseling, a guided reflection on personal biases related to pregnancy during adolescence, and a structured approach for providing high-quality pregnancy options counseling.

Learning Objectives

  1. Use sensitive and appropriate communication skills and language to discuss pregnancy options with a pregnant adolescent patient 
  2. Identify and name appropriate pregnancy-related resources and referrals 
  3. Apply knowledge of pregnancy options, including pertinent laws, in clinical scenarios

Jacquelin Rankine, MD, MS, specializes in pediatrics and is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. She practices at the University of Pittsburgh Physicians, Department of Adolescent Medicine. She completed her residency and fellowship at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and medical degree at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics. She is also board-certified with the American Board of Obesity Medicine and has also completed the certificate program in plant based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies.
